Looking after a microcement floor or bathroom: the complete guide
Day‑to‑day cleaning, what to avoid, when to re‑seal, and how to handle scratches or damage.
By Jonathan Heywood · 8 December 2024

A correctly installed microcement floor or bathroom is an exceptionally low‑maintenance surface — but a few simple habits keep it looking new for decades. Here's everything we tell every client at handover.
Daily and weekly cleaning
- Sweep or soft‑vacuum first to remove grit.
- Mop with warm water and a pH‑neutral cleaner. Soft cloth or microfibre — no abrasive pads.
- For shower walls and floors, a soft cloth and warm water is usually all that's needed.
What to absolutely avoid
- Bleach, ammonia and other strong alkalis.
- Acidic cleaners (descalers, limescale removers).
- Citrus‑based degreasers.
- Abrasive pads or wire wool.
- Sliding heavy furniture without felt pads.
Re‑sealing
Every 3‑5 years for high‑traffic floors and wet rooms; every 5‑8 years for low‑traffic walls and bedrooms. A light re‑seal restores water resistance and refreshes the depth of finish. We offer this as part of our aftercare service across Cornwall.
Scratches and damage
Light scuffs disappear with the next re‑seal. Deeper scratches can be locally re‑sanded, re‑finished and re‑sealed — the great advantage microcement holds over tile, which simply has to be replaced. We invoice repair visits at fixed cost.
Kitchen worktops
- Always use a trivet under direct heat.
- Always use a chopping board for direct knife work.
- Wipe up oils, wine and lemon juice promptly — same as you would on stone.
- Re‑seal every 3‑5 years in a working kitchen.
