Microcement worktops — honest pros, cons and answers
Where microcement worktops shine, where they don't, and how they really compare to quartz, granite and Dekton in daily kitchen use.
By Jonathan Heywood · 15 June 2025

Microcement worktops are having a moment. They deserve it — there's no other material that runs continuously from worktop to upstand to splashback to drainer with no visible joint. But they aren't stone, and pretending otherwise leads to disappointment.
What they do brilliantly
- Continuous, hand-finished surface from any angle
- Custom colour, custom edge profile, custom drainage grooves
- Fully waterproof — undermount sinks are no problem
- Repairable in place — chips and scratches are touched up, not replaced
What you need to accept
- Acidic spills (lemon, vinegar, wine) wiped within an hour are fine; overnight is risky
- Use trivets for cast iron straight off the hob
- The matte finish reads softer than honed granite — it's part of the appeal
- Sealer needs refreshing at the 8–10 year mark

Frequently asked questions
Are they food-safe?+
Yes. The 2K polyurethane sealer is certified for food contact.
Can you cut directly on them?+
Please don't — use a board. Same as quartz.
What about hot pans?+
Heat-resistant to about 150 °C continuous. For cast iron straight off the hob, use a trivet.
Will they stain?+
Coffee, tea and wine wiped within an hour leave nothing. Left overnight, especially with acidic foods, they can mark. Honest answer: treat like a fine timber, not like granite.
